Government


The City of Gallatin was founded in 1801 by the Tennessee General Assembly

A seven-member Council governs the City of Gallatin.  A full time Mayor is elected for a four-year term. Five members represent specific districts and two are elected at-large, with alternating four-year terms.

City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in City Council chambers on the second floor of City Hall.

Committee Sessions are held on all other Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. in the Mayor's Conference room.

Housed in City Hall are the offices of The Mayor, City Planner, Codes Administration, Personnel, Finance and Public Works Departments, and City Recorder/Judge. 


The

State Government

Gallatin is located in the 6th U.S. Congressional District (served by Representative Bart Gordon), the 18th State Senatorial District (served by Senator Diane Black), and the 44th and 45th Legislative Districts (served by Debra Maggart, Mike McDonald and Susan Lynn).

Gallatin has the distinction of being the county seat of Sumner County. Its central location and rich heritage as one of the oldest established municipal governments in Tennessee were factors in Gallatin’s selection as the Center of County Government.

Sumner County is governed by a 24-member County Commission, with two representatives elected from each of 12 magisterial districts and a County Executive (Anthony Holt) elected at-large. Officials are elected for four-year terms.

The County Commission meets on the third Monday of each month at the Sumner County Administration Building on Belvedere Drive.
 
Tax Structure
Gallatin offers a mixture of older, historic homes; modern family homes; and excellent apartment and condominium living. Lower taxes, lower land prices and a great quality of life keep residents in Gallatin and attract new families.

Sumner County’s sales tax rate is 2.25 percent, while the state has a 7 percent sales tax rate. Local sales tax revenue is limited to the first $1,600 of large-ticket items such as automobiles. The county also imposes a wheel tax for licensing vehicles, with a portion of that reserved for schools.
 
Property taxes are levied by both the city of residence and Sumner County, with assessment of residential property at 25 percent of appraised value.

The Gallatin Fire Department

Our local fire department has over 35 fultime firefighters and 15 volunteers. The main fire station is located in downtown Gallatin behind City Hall, with a substation on Nashville Pike next to Volunteer State Community College and one on Red River Road (Highway 25).

Emergency calls are dispatched through 911 and through direct calls to the station. Homes are inspected upon request, and extensive training programs are offered at area factories and businesses. Fire prevention programs are presented to the area elementary children. Gallatin’s Class 4 ISO insurance rating is the lowest in the county.
 
Gallatin Police Department

Our local police department is a modern, community-oriented agency that provides crime prevention and crime control services to the Gallatin community. Utilizing modern police theories and practices, the Gallatin Police Department continues to act as an innovator and leader in the field of law enforcement. The department strives to meet nationally recognized police standards and practices, understanding that positive public safety issues promote a positive environment for families and businesses.
 
Coordinated throught the Gallaitn Police Department are several community related programs, including Neighborhood Watch, a Citizens’ Police Academy, Shop with a Cop Christmas, the G.R.E.A.T. Program and an Explorers Post.
 
Sumner County Sheriff’s Department

Working closely with the Gallatin Police Department is the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department has 60 patrol officers, 168 correctional officers and seven criminal investigators and provides deputies to all of the high schools for the school resource officer program.
 
The Sheriff’s serves the criminal and civil process issued by the courts and maintains the safety and security of the Criminal Court, Juvenile Court, Chancery Court, Circuit Court, General Sessions Court and the County Jail. Deputies are specifically assigned to the 18th Judicial Drug Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force. 
   
Several deputies are assigned to the Countywide S.W.A.T./Negotiators Unit, which  includes members from the sheriff’s department, Gallatin Police Department, Portland Police Department, White House Police Department and the Millersville Police  Department. The Sumner County Jail has recently expanded housing for the inmate population from a 270-bed facility to a 700-bed facility.

Sumner County Emergency Management Association is a cooperative volunteer based effort among county Fire and Police Agencies that assists with hazardous materials handling, severe weather emergencies and similar catastrophic situations.
